Satellite is the new digital download site for dance music founded by the original owners of legendary NYC, Boston and Atlanta Satellite Records stores and satelliterecords.com. The NYC store opened in 1993, folllowed by Atlanta in 1996 and Boston in 1997, while the pioneering website satelliterecords.com was launched in 1996.
We are bringing our decades of music retail experience along with our commitment to customer service to DJs, fans, and producers to build our new store that will create the vibe and experience of what it was to shop at Satellite - getting turned onto new great music you may never have heard of, having the experience of easily finding what you need, and getting great customer service.
To help customers find and discover new, high-quality music that is not being featured or presented in other venues, Satellite offers Hot Picks and Curators. A Satellite tradition since 1996, Hot Picks are Satellite's way of showing you the best tracks based on their musical quality. It doesn't matter if they are made by the biggest producer or someone you've never heard of before, if it's a hot pick, it's a quality track.
Satellite curators are the top tastemakers in their genre, making recommendations in their genre specialty the day of a track's release. The curators have new recommendation lists each and every week. Think of it like walking into a record store and there's that salesperson that hands you the stack of what you'd be interested in. Find the curators you like best and follow them to find out about the best tracks first. New Curators are being added soon and there will be several for each genre.
The Satellite player perfectly re-creates the experience of auditioning a track at the record store by allowing customers to drop the playback needle anywhere on the track. The player also maintains a playlist and history of what you have played to help you keep track of all the great new music you've discovered.
Satellite's unique user interface leverages a tabbed-browsing experience. This allows you to wander the store with reckless abandon, just like digging through the crates. In addition, any track can be expanded with one-click from where-ever you are browsing so that you can see all the tracks in a release without having to go to a new page or reload the page in your browser. You can click on artists, labels, and genres and not lose your place where you are currently browsing. All of our pages, including Hot Picks and New Releases, allow you to drill in to the specific genre or sub-genre of interest to you. Our extensive use of dynamic HTML means fast page load times so you can quickly hear more and more music!
In addition to all of our cutting-edge features, we also have a carousel of featured releases, top downloads list, DJ charts, and other elements you would expect from any dance music download store. A unique cover flow shows you featured releases that will be of interest to all fans of dance - and you can audition them and check the rest of the site out without leaving the page! Our DJ charts feature far more information about the DJ than anywhere else with their bio, location, picture and the DJs comment about why each track is on the chart. Even if you didn't know the DJ when you started, you'll know why to check them out, and even be able to join their Facebook fan page or twitter feed.

History:
Satellite was founded in New York City in 1992 by partners Scott Richmond and Jonathan Kadish as an event production company. The iconic company produced such events as Sputnik and Voyager in venues like the Brooklyn Bridge Anchorage, Roseland, The Manhattan Center, Mid-Hudson Civic Center, Asbury Park Convention Center and more. They broke new talent, being the first company to bring Basement Jaxx, Laidback Luke, Global Communications and many more to America, and was also the first to bring many of the leading Mid-west and West Coast talent to New York.
They opened their first record store shortly thereafter in New York, followed by stores in Boston and Atlanta. In 1996, Satellite opened satelliterecords.com and set the standard for the online dance music retailing. The website set the standard for the way dance music was sold online and to this day most every website uses the classification and merchandising that Satellite pioneered. Satellite became the largest chain of its kind helping set the standard for dance music retail with their innovations in classification, listening stations, selection and sound samples.
