Archangel's Dark and Light Deepness
(Deep House)

Curator Info:

Archangel started spinning in 1992 in the US Midwest, almost exclusively in raves and underground parties. He started to make the transition to club circuit while in University, at which point he was picked up by "By Association" agency and hired to work on game music soundtracks for a developing MMORPG company. By this time, Archangel had enough local exposure to get steady local gigs and residencies in the town where he went to school along with occasional traveling gigs. His reputation for smooth and sexy deep house along with a respected flair for old school "true" disco was getting around. In 2002, Archangel moved to Japan and became a resident DJ at Club Asia's NEO Lounge in Shibuya. This notoriety translated into him being a sought-after private party DJ for some of Tokyo's elite, as well as a hired music shopper for other deep house DJs in the region. Other DJs, club personnel, and club-goers alike agreed upon his impeccable music selection and silky transitions. Hardcore club scenesters declared that it was always easy to tell his sets apart from all others just by the sound. (The expression commonly heard when he played a new venue was "今日は、めザらしくいい。”, meaning 'the music today is unusually good'.) In late 2004, Archangel was asked to work on music for radio stations and independent movies in Japan. Since spinning is his interest more than production, he agreed only to requests, and has never marketed himself in this way. Nevertheless, in 2005, he was commissioned to work on a US movie production after turning down offers for residencies in Seoul and Macau. Archangel has returned to the US, both to be closer to the production of the movie project and to complete his graduate education (which is now complete). He has appeared on Mix the Vibe radio from the UK as well as numerous club and event appearances since coming back to the US. Google has ranked him as the number one hit for "DJ Archangel" searches for almost two decades, and his new website has just now gone up. He is an officer and admin of the Deep House Experts group on Facebook where he helps artists, labels, and promoters try to network together in the interest of deep house music.

Archangel: Slow, but intense, Polar Pair grinds up their own grooves and churns out a tracky, deep, dub-thumper. Quirky synths and moaning vocal bits flutter over a deep bassline and plodding beat. There's a lot to love for the adventurous DJ and a room full of Deep Ones. Whereas the other track on this release feels more like an exercise, this one lays it down properly.

Archangel: Other than a more four-to-the-floor sort of beat, this is about as true to the classic sound as you can bring to your floor without alienating the Uninitiated. The Deep Ones will swoon. As it asks, "Why don't you do right.... and get this on your ones and twos?"

Archangel: Who says house is all about tempo? Go a little deeper with the extended mix, or if you don't have it in you, jack up the tempo with the full-on retro Casio Social Club mix-- which will bring in the handbaggers and appeal more to the uninitiated. Nice, R&B/synth pop vocals over the usual synth pop and a smooth bassline for the swayers and the lovers washes over your floor like the tide. Groovy!

Franck Matthews: This is the mix I'll put on my podcasts. BOMB track with a great message.
Archangel: Sweet Naked Music stylings croon their sultry way onto your floor with Samir's mix bringing a little more groove to the smooth. Typical breaks and vocals make it ripe for prime time. If you like it house-- and you like it deep-- you like this.

Archangel: Eery, droning key pattering sets a dreary mood while a heavy bass thumps away into the night. Bright synth parts bring it out of the gloom, but the shadows remain. Intensify a prime floor, or just sling it into oblivion where the shades of the Deep Ones await. Haunted.

Archangel: Not quite the homage to Murray Head's classic "One Night in Bangkok" one might expect, the refrain still evokes nostalgia while the updated synth groove rolls forward with a heavier dance vibe. Vocoders step it into the future (you know, the one where our robot overlords still let us dance?) and a "get down" bass groove over thumpy beats gives it some bump.

Archangel: Tesla Boy does synth pop like no other. Anton Sevidov's vocals bring passion and emotion to what could have been schlock but instead becomes a powerful ballad. Casio Social Club's mix isn't quite as house as the original, but its lighter feel may fit the floor and give you more flexibility to throw it into softer moments. Dig!
