Archangel's Dark and Light Deepness
(Deep House)

Curator Info:

Archangel started spinning in 1992 in the US Midwest, almost exclusively in raves and underground parties. He started to make the transition to club circuit while in University, at which point he was picked up by "By Association" agency and hired to work on game music soundtracks for a developing MMORPG company. By this time, Archangel had enough local exposure to get steady local gigs and residencies in the town where he went to school along with occasional traveling gigs. His reputation for smooth and sexy deep house along with a respected flair for old school "true" disco was getting around. In 2002, Archangel moved to Japan and became a resident DJ at Club Asia's NEO Lounge in Shibuya. This notoriety translated into him being a sought-after private party DJ for some of Tokyo's elite, as well as a hired music shopper for other deep house DJs in the region. Other DJs, club personnel, and club-goers alike agreed upon his impeccable music selection and silky transitions. Hardcore club scenesters declared that it was always easy to tell his sets apart from all others just by the sound. (The expression commonly heard when he played a new venue was "今日は、めザらしくいい。”, meaning 'the music today is unusually good'.) In late 2004, Archangel was asked to work on music for radio stations and independent movies in Japan. Since spinning is his interest more than production, he agreed only to requests, and has never marketed himself in this way. Nevertheless, in 2005, he was commissioned to work on a US movie production after turning down offers for residencies in Seoul and Macau. Archangel has returned to the US, both to be closer to the production of the movie project and to complete his graduate education (which is now complete). He has appeared on Mix the Vibe radio from the UK as well as numerous club and event appearances since coming back to the US. Google has ranked him as the number one hit for "DJ Archangel" searches for almost two decades, and his new website has just now gone up. He is an officer and admin of the Deep House Experts group on Facebook where he helps artists, labels, and promoters try to network together in the interest of deep house music.

Get down and dirty!: The more you get, the more you want... do we need to say more? This classic loop captures it...
Archangel: Disco fire ignites your floor with classic soul power vocals and the orchestration of a proper anthem. Horns and strings drop the glitter bomb on everyone under the mirror ball. There will be cheering, sweating, and smiles for miles. Bounce it off their heads and say, "You're welcome!"

Archangel: Dreamy and loaded with new age types of instruments, the beautiful harmony of the elements of the track beatifies your set with heavenly deepness. The sleepwalkers may be the only ones who will stay through the whole thing, but you could risk it on the Deep Ones if you're going somewhere with it.

Archangel: It's time for a little loving on the dance floor. Sweet and sexy are the themes of the groove while the chill beat rides along and gives all the hips a notion for motion. Oh yeah.

Archangel: Unlike its disco brother on this EP, this one brings dire intensity and a slightly deeper vibe without sleeping through it. Still appropriate for prime time, if you need to gear more toward the initiated or just want the intensity without the disco inferno, this one's the one to pick. Hell, be a hero and mix them into each other. Bam!

Archangel: Smooth-- almost Doors-esque-- psychedelic organ keys meander over a nice swaggering bassline. A light, but playful beat pumps along to keep it deep, but funky. The heads will nod.

Archangel: SOlid is about the best word to describe this foundation track for building a strong movement within a deep set. Wah-wah FX on the synth pads keep it smooth while the intense bassline and driving beat keep it moving. Minimal decorative FX give you more power to use it as you will, but the absolutely "solid" construction of the track gives you time to let it play while you plan your next move.

Get down and dirty!: Smooth chords and strings set the mood on this slick piece.
Archangel: More fashionista flavor with all the glamor and glitz you can muster, horns and tickling ivories keep the evening gowns swaying underneath the chandeliers. Pauses and stop-go rhythms give them something to put a little extra sweat into. If you need it, there's a vocal version, but I think the dub has more versatility and plays a better backdrop for the beautiful people.

Archangel: The rather ridiculous autotune can be forgiven (a little) due to the nice and smooth general groove. It even has an elegant vibe to it that might signify a proper fashionista gem (they might even dig the autotune). Bassline with slap elements to make it more organic plus more lounge-like vocal flavor makes the sexy come out. The pitched down vocals at the break are just plain weird, but it's also tolerable-- seriously, who was the guy with the vocal FX board? Somebody should confiscate it from him.

Archangel: Simple, poppy, and begging to be accepted to anthem status, with homages to previous classic dance floor hits, this one trots along at a peppy pace underneath some soulful vocals and nice R&B-esque synth keys. This should supply adequate handbag to a crowd that needs something accessible or light.

Archangel: Seeping up from the cracks in the basement door, this house jacker looms grimly over a bumping bassline. Basic vocal samples loop and echo before the acid squelches kick in and transport the whole affair to another dimension. Haunted.

Archangel: A nice flowing, deep groove wrests the "smoothest track" title from the other fine track on this release. Organ chords lilt over '80s funk synth squeals and minisample vocal ornamentation to keep it simple and grooving so your floor keeps moving.

Archangel: There's a very warehouse party feeling in this one, with the pitched up minisamples used a little in excess as is more typical with the ravey vibes. It has a big room feel with the echoic, deep break and the plodding bassline gives a strong backbone to any attempts to just hammer the crowd with a beat for 5 minutes or so. The synths keep it from going too hard by wafting a deeper melody across the drone.
