Primed for a career in music, Scott began piano training at the age of four, violin by the age of seven and by the time he touched a record five years later, was also on his way to becoming a conservatory-trained musician. A DJ since the young age of fourteen, New York’s Scott Richmond arguably grew up behind the decks. His classical training with a BFA in music composition and studio engineering and his early beginnings as a professional DJ helped shape his diverse approach and deep connection with music and the music industry.
Offered his first residency at 18 when a club DJ (who Scott brought records to every week) quit and bluntly said “take over,” Scott immediately rose to the challenge. DJing 6 hours a night, he experimented with fusing everything from new wave, industrial and alternative, to hip hop and reggae, creating a musical journey that responded to crowd reactions. These early days were a direct influence on Scott’s future musical style, which includes everything from smooth and deep house to afro-Latin beats and funky electro house. It is this adaptive ability, deep love of music and commitment to his audience that has landed him gigs from Los Angeles to Tel Aviv. He was also a pioneer of dance radio, DJing on both college radio at WVKR Vassar College (his show was the second most popular show on the air) and commercial radio at WDST Woodstock.
Simply being a DJ has never been enough for Scott though, and while in college Scott engineered and produced several bands in genres from Jazz to Rock to Reggae to R&B, including a demo for Cooly’s Hot Box which subsequently got them signed to Polygram. Scott also wrote several modern dance pieces and produced the largest student produced dance production ever done at Purchase in the well renowned Performing Arts Center. As a senior in college in 1992 he co-founded Satellite Productions with partner Jonathan Kadish. In the subsequent years, the iconic company produced such events as Sputnik and Voyager in venues like the Brooklyn Bridge Anchorage, Roseland, The Manhattan Center, Mid-Hudson Civic Center, Asbury Park Convention Center and more. They broke new talent, being the first company to bring Basement Jaxx, Laidback Luke, Global Communications and many more to America, and was also the first to bring many of the leading Mid-west and West Coast talent to New York.
This paved the way for them to found Satellite Records the following year in New York City, with locations opening in Atlanta and Boston in 1996 and 1997 respectively. Satellte became best known for their launch of would become the market leading online retail site, satelliterecords.com in 1996. Their website set the standard for the way dance music was sold online and to this day most every website uses the classification and merchandising that Satellite pioneered. Satellite became the largest chain of its kind helping set the standard for dance music retail with their innovations in classification, listening stations, selection and sound samples. Scott was the visionary of Satellite’s mission “to continuously inspire our customers to develop and transform their taste in music through selection, presentation and guidance in an environment where our customers and their tastes are respected and valued.” At its peak Satellite sold 750,000 records a year. Scott served as CEO and head music buyer, sometimes listening to almost 400 records a week, and managed a staff and management structure that included almost 100 people all aligned to carry out Satellite’s mission. Scott also succeeded in having Satellite become the first retailer to import from almost 80 overseas distributors, breaking the monopoly American distributors had on the market.
In conjunction with the store, Scott also co-founded Central Park Recordings in 1999. Almost immediately it became one of the US’s highest regarded house music labels. At Central Park, Scott helped discover and break such talents as Tortured Soul, Alix Alvarez and Osunlade. Many house classics originated from the label including Tortured Soul’s “I Might Do Something Wrong.” Central Park’s catalogue was featured on the CD “Afterhours New York” and many other compilations. Additionally, Scott was the co-A&R behind Pitch Black and Pipeline Records, which released many progressive classics and discovered and featured such artists as Blackwatch, Moshic, John Creamer & Stephane K and several others, with music featured on compilations from leading DJs in the business including Paul Oakenfold, Dave Seaman and Nick Warren.
Part of the success of the labels was the innovative distribution structure that Scott set up, which lead to the creation of Satellite Label Group Distribution. Satellite Label Group Distribution followed a European model of exclusive distribution of selected labels. This included several labels including Music Now (run by the prestigious Kurosh Nasseri), Made in which they sold over 10,000 copies of the now classic iio “Rapture,” Ministry of Sound US and many others including Satellite’s own labels.
While Scott loves to empower other people’s music be heard through the variety of ways described above, he has also been successful as a recording artist. His release “Tarenah” is featured on the very famous Café Del Mar Vol. 2 compilation that sold over 300,000 copies and is being re-released by Universal Records and featured on the “All Night Long” DJ Mix CD by Layo and Bushwacka. He also collaborated with John Selway on the now classic “Keep On Climbing” which was featured on Danny Tenaglia’s “Twisted Secrets 2” compilation for Twisted records among others. Scott and ex-production partner Ebar were commissioned for remixes of Ian Friday’s “Carib’s Leap” released on West End Records and Ananda Project’s “Free Me” which was released in October 2007 by King Street Records.
Scott’s dedication throughout all his ventures has always been to empower creative people whether it be through entrepreneurial or music ventures. Scott has been involved in every facet of music, as an artist, radio and club DJ, engineer, label, distributor, art director, retailer, marketer, promoter and performed all these various aspects with excellence in both the physical and online realms. In 2007 Scott turned his attention to taking those talents and applying them to other people’s music businesses and entrepreneurships.
He sold the physical Satellite stores and began to specialize in consulting for music companies and small business/entrepreneurs. He has worked with a diverse group of companies including several record labels, music magazines, marketing companies, performance venues, music technology companies, social networking widget developers and trade seminars Remix Hotel and the Winter Music Conference. Most recently, he helped develop the business approach, marking plan and marketing materials for a leading technology company specializing in online direct sale music widgets. With two recent clients Scott saved them thousands in design and development costs in branding and web development. He supports them in many areas including marketing and promotion; viral and web; team building, mentoring and management structures; artistic direction; online distribution, project management, business set-up and planning; artist and brand development; contract negotiation and intellectual property management; and more. Scott uses his unique history and position in niche marketing, strategic partnerships, and co-branding to create opportunities for companies in the tough economic climate. He has dedicated himself to helping music companies and entrepreneurs avoid the pitfalls that everyone in business encounters and works with them to improve and develop their businesses.
Strictly Rhythm, one of the world’s most recognized dance labels, approached Scott in late 2007 to start a new joint venture record label. Scott teamed up with the talented Dani Deahl, a DJ and writer for Urb Magazine, BPM and TimeOut Chicago and launched Calamity Jane recordings in 2008. Continuing in the tradition of his past labels, Scott and his partner discovered and guided top notch talents True Pseudo, Pilotpriest and the Glamour. He assists them honing and developing their sound and ultimately brings them to new audiences. Inspired by working with this amazing talent, in 2009, Scott and his team launched Pipeline Music Management. Pipeline represents the best cutting edge talent Scott and his associates can find and represents them in the areas of booking, management and PR. Scott also recently relaunched the event side of Satellite and in the last few years has teamed up with promotion partner Tom Mello producing events throughout NYC featuring talent such as Felix da Housecatt, Miguel Migs, Kerri Chandler, Spank Rock, Diplo, Steve Aoki, DJ Sneak, Dave Seaman and many more of the top notch DJ and live dance music oriented talent the world has to offer.
Currently, Scott’s main focus has been consulting for music companies and talent development for his label and management. Scott looks forward to growing music businesses and empowering entrepreneurs and artists in every fashion he has available to him. His talent and vision allow him to capture the essence of a business or individual and to bring it to the greatest fruition possible.
